With the pitfalls of winter weather and the necessity of forgoing fashion at times for the sake of shoveling your driveway, winter is still a wonderful time to be fashionable with boots, fun scarves and long pea coats that help one look put together with the slightest effort. And while the weather still may be sending a shiver up your spine, spring will be here before you know it, with an advent of new styles and looks that will signify a much needed trip to the mall. But how does one integrate pieces they love from winter into spring worthy looks when the transitional season weather has gone haywire? Here are a few tips and tricks for pulling off parts of your winter wardrobe for spring.

Know what you have, assessing your wardrobe pieces as a whole. This piece of advice cannot be repeated enough, as you don’t know where you’re going stylistically if you don’t know where you’ve been. Look at pieces with a three-quarter or a half-length sleeve, as well as things in a moderate to lightweight fabric. These are pieces you can pull on for both seasons to look super chic at a moment’s notice. Take a minute to write down or catalogue pieces you think will make the cut or hit the garbage bin, and get that spring cleaning done a little early.

Reuse basic pieces. These are timeless and will transcend seasons for eternal style. Denim, white button-down shirts, quality tees and cardigans are excellent examples and, when worn with a twist, can be a fabulous way to preview some of the bright and powerful looks that have been showcased for the upcoming spring season. A good way to deal with denim jeans or a button-down, for example, would be to cuff them, a chic look that is effortless in nature and can be a lifesaver when warmer weather strikes.

Start off with accessories, and pair them with fundamental wardrobe pieces for spring. Remember that scarf with the fringe you’ve been wearing all winter? Don’t throw it to the back of the closet when spring breezes float in. Instead, wrap it artfully around your neck with a loose top of lightweight fabric to integrate your old accessories into new head turners. This works well with jewelry, especially any pieces that are bright, bold and chunky, as these powerful statements are in for spring.

Lastly, have fun with your wardrobe. Finding fun solutions to get the most out of your winter wear is well worth the effort. It’s not only environmentally friendly but economically conscious for students and those with a small clothing budget. Making baby steps toward bold trends is good for those who want to start wearing more fashionable pieces. Thrift stores carry trendy items at a fraction of the retail price, so you won’t go broke for trying out the new trends.
