The Northern Virginia Community College men’s soccer team won its final game at Lord Fairfax Community College in Winchester on Oct. 22, with a score of 5-2.
Coach Brian Robertson’s team had a rocky start, losing its first three games, but then won five in a row, then losing to powerful Howard Community College, and finally winning its final game for a fine 6-4 season record, which included two postponements.
Perhaps a measure of its progression is indicated by its having lost to Hagerstown Community …

NOVA Volleyball Team Ends Season

NOVA’s women’s volleyball team took on the powerful Hagerstown Community College squad in their final match of the year on Nov. 3.

Before the match, the five team members who were playing their last game for NOVA were honored in a brief ceremony. These members included Zoie Seay, Malena Lopez, Nikelle Willis, Rachel Barfield and Kristina Hilgenhurst.

With NOVA’s soccer and volleyball teams having finished their seasons and the ice hockey team continuing its season, the NOVA basketball teams swung into action on the evening of Nov. 3.
Both teams are beginning anew as neither the men’s nor the women’s teams have any returning players from last year.
The men’s team is coached by fifth year coach Mike Fitzmaurice, aided by Sean Fitzmaurice and Michael Abdeljabbar. The men’s roster includes 12 players, all freshmen. It includes eight players from 6-foot-5-inch tall to 6-foot-7–inch tall. Ten of the players come …

NOVA Hockey Stuns GMU in Overtime

Center Grady Little readies a shot versus GMU.

Early in the morning of Sunday, Oct. 10 at the Ashburn Ice House, NOVA ice hockey’s defenseman Colin Milford scored a sudden death overtime goal with 2:05 remaining to shock the George Mason Patriots, 3-2 before a goodnight owl crowd, with a game that began at 10:30 p.m.

Soccer’s Winning Streak Ends

In perhaps its best game of the year, on the afternoon of Oct. 19 at Woodbridge’s Howison Homestead Park, NOVA lost a closely contested match to the National Junior College Athletic Association powerhouse Howard Community College Dragons.

NOVA Holds Golf Tourney

NOVA’s intramural golf tournament, organized by Dr. Muhammed Basit, the Executive Assistant to the Dean of Students at the Annandale campus, took place on Oct. 7 at the Penderbrook Golf Course near Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, under the auspices of the NOVA Student Activities Office of Brian Anweiler.

Volleyball Team Splits Two

The NOVA women’s volleyball team traveled to Frederick on Sept. 30 to again face the Frederick Community College team, which they had earlier beaten in the season-opening tournament by taking three of four sets. This time the team improved on that performance by winning the match in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-16.

The NOVA women’s volleyball team played its first home match of the year on Sept. 16, at Annandale’s Ernst Gym and defeated a tenacious Cecil College Seahawks team, three games to zero.
