Lacrosse Team Improves Record

The Northern Virginia Community College men’s lacrosse team played three home games, beating the County College of Morris (N.J.) 12-8 on March 19 at GMU. Then, on March 23, they tied the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville 7-7 in a game suspended after three quarters and which was to be finished later. The third game resulted in a win over Delaware Technical & Community College 8-6 on April 2.

Women Basketballers End Regular Season Before Tournament

The NOVA women’s basketball team ended its regular season on February 24 and 26 with two losses, first to the Hagerstown Community College Hawks 73-48 at the Annandale campus and then to Thomas Nelson Community College in a close one, 62-61, at Hoop Magic in Chantilly, Virginia.

In the game against the strong Hagerstown team, NOVA never led though it tied the scored a few times early on. At the ten minute mark of the first half, NOVA was down by six at 23-17, and by the seven minute to go mark, Hagerstown had opened its lead to 33-19. At halftime, NOVA trailed 42-29, and it was led by Kimberly Walton’s ten points.

Women Place 2nd in VCCS Basketball Tournament

The NOVA women’s basketball team earned a second seed for the VCCS tournament by going 5-3 during the regular season and finished second in the March 4-6 tournament in Chesapeake, losing to Tidewater Community College Storm in the final, 57-47, on Sunday afternoon.

Ice Hockey Team’s Playoff Hopes Disappear

After losing to George Mason University on Jan. 21, it still looked like the Northern Virginia Community College ice hockey team had a chance to make the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference playoffs. But it appeared it would take wins over both the College of William and Mary and James Madison University over the Jan. 28 weekend to do so. Instead, it turned into a double debacle weekend.

Women’s Basketball Team Beats Southside Virginia

The Northern Virginia Community College women’s basketball team defeated its VCCS rival, Southside Virginia Community College, at Annandale’s Ernst Gym on Jan. 29 to win its second game in a row, 76-66 in overtime.

This close game saw Southside take a slim 30-29 halftime lead. Kimberley Walton paced NOVA in the first half with 11 points, while Lauren Amonett added nine.

Men’s Basketball Winning Streak Goes to 15

The Northern Virginia Community College men’s basketball team’s phenomenal winning streak has increased to 15 with its most recent victory over archrival Southside Virginia Community College at Lawrenceville on Feb. 12.

Women Enliven Ice Hockey Team

Olivia Gonzalez and Amanda Brawley are the two Northern Virginia Community College women ice hockey players who make the NOVA team co-ed. One thing to know about these two women is that they love to play hockey.

I spoke with these two women before a recent practice.

This is Gonzalez’s second year playing. She originally wanted to come out as a manager, because she had heard that she’d be able to skate with the team during practices. Coach Barrett Haga had other ideas for her, as he asked her to try out for the team. Gonzalez decided that she wanted to take the opportunity to improve her skills.

Hockey Team Goes for the Playoffs

The NOVA hockey team, replenished for the spring semester with the addition of some new players but the loss of others, had three games remaining in its Atlantic Division of the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference. The results of those games would determine whether it would reach the playoffs, as four of the eight Atlantic Division teams reach them.

Men’s Winning Streak Reaches 9

The Northern Virginia Community College men’s basketball team started its second-semester season in strong fashion, winning its first four games to run its winning streak to nine and raising its season record to 13-5.

The semester break saw the team add two strong players in forward S. Dolman and guard Bobby Mott.

Men’s Basketball Team Wins Thriller to Go 9-5

Guard Gavio Peterson’s three-point shot with 11.9 seconds to go broke a second half tie and helped send Northern Virginia Community College to a 67-63 win over the Howard Community College Dragons at Annandale’s Ernst Gym on the evening of Dec. 21.
