Go Font Yourself

The Communication Design Department of the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College opened the exhibit “Go Font Yourself” in the Tyler Teaching Gallery on Nov. 9. The exhibition explored the art of the letter form using both traditional and unconventional mediums. Most exhibitors were NOVA Communication Design students.

Normally I write gaming articles, but I’ve decided to branch out this time and write something different. Halloween is now behind us and, with Thanksgiving on the horizon, many of us will be heading to the stores, intent on acquiring presents for the upcoming holiday season. As we embark on our journey down through the danger-filled dungeons of the department stores and set out on the tattered trail of televised toy technologies, many of us go forth armed with the belief that the customer is always right. Redskins Cheerleaders Cheer for Woodbridge Campus

Before they had even walked into the campus atrium, a long line had formed. Students, mostly men, waited patiently but excitedly to meet five of the beautiful and peppy Washington Redskins cheerleaders on Nov. 2. Their presence on the Woodbridge campus was thanks to Phi Theta Kappa’s Football Day event.

While for the past few seasons we’ve seen the surge of the Ugg brand’s pull-on suede and wool numbers, this trend is slowly fading, and rougher, edgier styles have hit top priority in the market.

“Piranha” Bites But Doesn’t Leave Mark

[Sabbath-Night-in-the-Church] No family is perfect – just look at the Penrose family presented in the play, “Sabbath Night in the Church of the Piranha.” Performed by Taking Flight Theatre at NOVA’s Loudoun campus from Oct. 8 through 23, the play allowed the audience a glimpse into the dysfunction and wounds that family can inflict upon each other.

NEEDTOBREATHE Outside, Looking In

Faced with a career in either football or music, Bear Rinehart, lead singer of NEEDTOBREATHE chose the latter and still hasn’t looked back. NEEDTOBREATHE will bring their intimate folk sound to the 9:30 club on Nov. 4 in support of their most recent album, “The Outsiders.”
“You have to have that thing in your life…  you just couldn’t live without it,” Rinehart said in an interview with NOVA Fortnightly. “I just wasn’t that way about sports, and I am that way about music.”

A Sneak Peek at Anime USA 2010

Don’t put away the costumes yet because there is one more event that will happen soon after Halloween. Anime USA 2010 will begin from Nov. 12 to 14 at the Hyatt Crystal City in Arlington.

Magic: The Gathering card game witnessed a change in its standard, the likes of which have rarely been seen, on Oct. 1. The new expansion, titled Scars of Mirrodin, was released rotating the Shards of Alara block out of standard and changing the face of the game as players knew it. Not only was the popular archetype Jund, which at its prime was played by no less than 40 percent of all players in every major event worldwide, thrown to the wind but the classic archetype of Blue-White Control was given even more power and has been seeing Top 8 placements in every event since Scars came out.

Toy Solders help save lives

The toy soldiers don’t actually do the saving, but the existence of these particular toy soldiers will certainly help lives across the world. Recently, a group of hobbyists got together to embark on a mission to give something back to the world through their favorite hobby: table top war games.
