More than 8,600 Virginia high school students will have the opportunity and guidance to apply to college. Virginia College Application Week is part of a national initiative designed to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. Participating students are encouraged to submit at least one college application during the week.

This year the Commonwealth has 43 high schools in 32 districts participating in this program. View the list of participants here.

In support of this effort, Governor Terry McAuliffe has proclaimed Nov. 17-21 Virginia College Application Week. “It is critical that we encourage students across the Commonwealth to pursue higher education and that is why College Education Week is so important,” said Governor McAuliffe. “In order to build a 21st century global economy, we must ensure that more young people take advantage of educational opportunities from certificate programs to college degrees.”

In Virginia, the Secretary of Education’s office, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), and the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities in Virginia (CICV) are joining with principals, counselors, coordinators, and volunteers to provide hands-on application assistance. Additional resources available to students include computer lab time, application fee waivers, and informational materials.
“Transforming the lives of first-generation and low-income students with education that continues past high school must be part of Virginia’s future,” says SCHEV Director Peter Blake. “Students across the Commonwealth can benefit from the one-on-one assistance that College Application Week provides.”
