Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

The Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College will host the play “Funnel Cakes Not Included” on Oct. 8 in Colgan Theater. “Funnel Cakes Not Included” is described as a comedy about severe depression, the power of empathy and the need to erase the stigma attached to mental illness. The show is set to begin at 11 a.m., and conclude by 12:30 p.m.

Deena Nyer Mendlowitz is the presenter. On her website, she writes:
“I am Deena. I have depression. I have a mental illness. I also have a very intense love for 80s sitcom reruns. I am not ashamed to say any of these sentences. And none of these sentences define me. What does? My desire to live a life filled with comedy, empathy, and love. We might not get to choose all that happens to us or all we are, but we do get to choose what defines us. Never give up that power. Mrs. Garrett wouldn’t.”

Mendlowitz is a freelance writer, a former greeting card writer and a comedy improviser who trained at The Second City Cleveland and at both The Second City and Annoyance Theater in Chicago. She is also the creator of “This Improvised Life,” a partly improvised, partly written story-telling hour.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be free parking in a designated area.
