Northern Virginia Community College’s Robotics Team 1 has won the design award at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Anaheim, Calif.

The team members include Andrew Bender (Woodbridge), Justin Dommer (Manassas), Oscar McCullough (Triangle), Nick Reeves (Woodbridge), Matt Rheinstein (Woodbridge) and Jason Sanchez (Dumfries). The team earned the award in the VEXU division, which recognizes an outstanding engineering notebook based on the following criteria:

§ Engineering notebook is a clear, complete document of the team’s design and build process

§ Team is able to explain their design and strategy throughout the season

§ Team demonstrates personnel, time and resource management throughout the season

§ Teamwork and interview quality

The competition included 15,000 participants compromised of 760 teams (elementary, middle, high, and college level) from 27 countries. NOVA Robotics is based at NOVA’s Woodbridge campus but open to all NOVA students. It is an outgrowth of SySTEMic Solutions – NOVA’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) outreach program.

“We are very proud of the students in their efforts and success in representing Northern Virginia Community College and the Commonwealth at the world championship,” said Josh Labrie, SySTEMic Solutions program manager. “Their achievement not only speaks well of NOVA, but also of the STEM talent that is being developed in the region through the partnership between NOVA’s SySTEMic Solutions and the region’s eight school divisions.”

He added: “The business community, particularly the Micron Foundation, has made collaborative STEM programs and competitions widely available in the region, and it is through their direct support that the NOVA team was created.”
