College Dance Contest to Feature Celebrity Co-Host
NOVA’s Favorite Dancer final competition will be held at 2 p.m., on April 6 in Colgan Theater at the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College. This new dance contest features nine soloists and one dance group selected by audition to compete for cash prizes.
The event is free and open to the community. Because a capacity crowd is expected, reservations are required at novasfavoritedancer.com.
NOVA dance instructor Claire Davidson and poet Jaime “Shaggy” Flores will serve as co-hosts.
As one of the poets who have worked to reinvigorate the Nuyorican poetry movement in recent years, Flores brings a scholarly attitude to what he refers to as cultural work. He sees poetry as a way to simultaneously inspire people and educate them. For him poetry is a vehicle to dismantle stereotypes and damaging myths and to share knowledge of music, Puerto Rican culture and traditions, urban culture, the political movements of the 60s and 70s, African cultural traditions and black history in the Atlantic.
The Manassas campus is located at 6901 Sudley Road. For more information, contact Beth Elliott at belliott@nvcc.edu.
