Broken down by won-lost success, the Northern Virginia Community College men’s lacrosse team season consisted of three parts. Unfortunately, the losing portions outnumbered the winning.

The first losing section covered the first three games, as NOVA lost all three of their contests in February.

Beginning in March and extending into early April, NOVA, however, turned its fortunes around, winning three of four games with one additional game ending in a tie that was completed later.

Then, with its April 8 game, NOVA saw its fortunes turn back for the worse, as it lost its last four games of the season, including completion of the postponed game, by scores of 18-4, 11-4, 23-0 and 10-8.

Its last home game, held at Stonewall Jackson High in Manassas, against Community College of Baltimore County-Essex on April 30, stacked up as its toughest game of the year against a team that was soon ranked number two in the national junior college lacrosse poll. Halftime saw NOVA behind 13-0, and the second half did not get much better. NOVA remained scoreless, losing 21-0.

The postponed game of March 23 at a GMU field had seen NOVA take a 5-2 halftime lead and a 7-4 lead in the third quarter. However, the Catonsville team of the Community College of Baltimore County rallied to tie the score 7-7 with 17.4 seconds left in that quarter. Seconds later the game was called due to lightning nearby. The game was completed at the Catonsville campus on May 1. NOVA lost that final game 10-8.

With the loss, Coach Matt Blarney’s team ended with a 3-8 record in NOVA’s second year of fielding a lacrosse team.
