Redskins Cheerleaders Cheer for Woodbridge Campus
Before they had even walked into the campus atrium, a long line had formed. Students, mostly men, waited patiently but excitedly to meet five of the beautiful and peppy Washington Redskins cheerleaders on Nov. 2. Their presence on the Woodbridge campus was thanks to Phi Theta Kappa’s Football Day event.
There were lots of students in attendance, many of whom were on campus only to meet the cheerleaders.
Ronald Wright, a computer science major, was one such student. He said he loves football and, although the New York Giants are his favorite team, he also likes the Redskins.
During the event, the cheerleaders signed autographs and socialized with students. But the most captivating part of their presence was the performance they gave outside on the patio by the pond, among the many autumn-colored trees on a bright, sunny day.
Their routine was energetic and spot on, as is to be expected from one of the best cheerleading squad in the country. The first song they danced to was Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” followed by Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.”
After the cheerleaders danced, PTK held a raffle. Some people walked away with gift cards to various restaurants, but Kacey Collins, a history and geography major, walked away with the grand prize: a signed miniature helmet.
In addition to the cheerleaders’ visit, there was a table with chili for sale by the campus PTK. The selection included vegetarian chili, regular red chili and white chicken chili.
The Washington Redskins cheerleaders, also called the First Ladies of Football, originate from all over the world, from Cleveland to South Africa. However, one of the five who came to the campus that day used to be a student at the college. Lindsey A. (they are not allowed to give out their full names) studied at Northern Virginia Community College before transferring to George Mason University, where she graduated. Although she couldn’t give out too many details about herself, Lindsey said it was great coming to the college after being away.
In addition to Lindsey, the other cheerleaders present were Megs, Dawn, Kristin and Sabrina. All the women said they enjoy giving back to the community and often visit schools and events to get Redskins’ pride flowing through people’s veins. They also said they planned on voting in the mid-term election after the event since it was Election Day.
The considerable attendance at Football Day can only bode well for Phi Theta Kappa’s future events.
