NOVA Basketball Begins

16 November 2010 No Comment

With NOVA’s soccer and volleyball teams having finished their seasons and the ice hockey team continuing its season, the NOVA basketball teams swung into action on the evening of Nov. 3.

Both teams are beginning anew as neither the men’s nor the women’s teams have any returning players from last year.

The men’s team is coached by fifth year coach Mike Fitzmaurice, aided by Sean Fitzmaurice and Michael Abdeljabbar. The men’s roster includes 12 players, all freshmen. It includes eight players from 6-foot-5-inch tall to 6-foot-7–inch tall. Ten of the players come from the Northern Virginia area, with one from D.C. and one from California.

The men’s team began its season on Nov. 3 at Montgomery College-Germantown. It will play 23 games plus three tournaments during the season as well as a season-ending Virginia Community College tournament. Included in its schedule are 10 VCCS games during the regular season. Its first game at home is Nov. 30. Overall, it will play eight games at Ernst Gym at Annandale campus.

The women’s team, coached by second-year coach Wayne Vincent, aided by Vanessa Baker and Shawn Blow, began its season at Hagerstown Community College, also on Nov. 3. The team will play 21 games plus two tournaments and the season-ending VCCS tournament. Seven games are scheduled against VCCS opponents. The first game is not until Dec. 18 at Annandale campus, where it will play eight games.

The women’s roster includes nine players, three of whom are sophomores. Most come from the Northern Virginia area, with one from D.C. and one from California, echoing the men’s team composition.
