NOVA Soccer on a Roll

6 October 2010 No Comment

Coach Brian Robertson and Assistant Coach Kristi Beckham address the NOVA soccer team at halftime versus Lord Fairfax.

Since losing its first three matches, the NOVA men’s soccer team has been on a winning streak, winning its next three.

First, on Sept. 11 the team traveled to Owings Mill, Md., and shut out the Stevenson University JV 1-0 for its first win of the year.

Next, it traveled out to Purcellville, Va., on Sept. 18 and pasted Patrick Henry College 4-1 for win number two.

Finally, on Sept. 24, the NOVA team returned to its Woodbridge home field on a hot day with temperatures in the 90’s but with some breeze and defeated the Lord Fairfax Community College Cannons of Winchester, Va., 8-2.

In the first half, NOVA dominated, with Lord Fairfax hardly having a shot at goal. At about the 13-minute mark, a Jose Portillo shot from about 25 feet out to the right of the goal that was blocked in front of the goal was kicked by Cesar Guevera Mendieta from short range into the left side of the goal, making it 1-0 NOVA Then, at about the 34-minute mark, NOVA’s Emmanuel Bagumira used his height to his advantage as he headed a corner kick into the goal, making it 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Lord Fairfax was finally able to find some offense, but NOVA found more. At about the 16-minute mark, NOVA’s Jorgo Selencia knocked a header into the goal from about 15 feet, making it 3-0. Lord Fairfax quickly replied with a goal about a minute later to make it 3-1.

The next 28 minutes saw a flurry of NOVA goals, as NOVA’s Luis Velasco, Fredy Corrales and Jean Pierre Kanashiro, who outraced the Lord Fairfax defenders down the field to the goal, all scored.

The final score was open to some conjecture, as the NOVA reporter apparently was feeling the effects of the heat. He had the final score as 6-1, a queried player had it as 7-2, and assistant coach Kristi Beckman had it as 8-2, which coming from the most reliable source was taken as the final score.

The soccer team will try to continue its winning streak as it travels to four away sites for its next matches, including a rematch with Hagerstown Community College, before returning for its last home match on Oct. 19 against Howard (Md.) Community College. Its last game will be a rematch with Lord Fairfax at Winchester on Oct. 22.
