After undertaking a major restoration, Mount Vernon has reopened a room in George Washington’s mansion to visitors.

The space was referred to as the “New Room” by the Washingtons. New research, examination and technical analysis have revealed a more accurate history of this prominent entertaining space. The restoration of this room began in January 2013 and just concluded this month. It is based on 160 years of cumulative research. Some of the discoveries made have resulted in significant changes. For instance, little evidence suggests it was used for dining, as previously thought.

Mount Vernon also acquired works of art to more accurately represent the space as it was in Washington’s time, as the room showcased many paintings.

It takes less than an hour to get to Mount Vernon from most of Northern Virginia (if it’s not rush hour). It’s an easy jaunt to go see the recent interpretation of how the first U.S. president used this space. Of course, there’s much more to George Washington’s estate than the New Room. Mount Vernon encompasses a multitude of buildings, each with a specific purpose. The mansion itself is filled with spectacular and colorful décor and the grounds offer a wide view of the Potomac River.

To get to Mount Vernon from eastern Fairfax and Prince William counties, take Interstate 95 north to exit 161 for U.S. 1 northbound. Travel on U.S. 1 for approximately six miles, past Fort Belvoir. Then turn right onto Route 235 north. Mount Vernon is three miles straight ahead, at a roundabout traffic circle.
