All Lanes on I-395 North to Close Next Weekend

UPDATE: The previously scheduled closure of all regular lanes on I-395 north this Friday night, Jan. 10 has been postponed until next weekend (Jan. 17-19) due to the cancellation of steel work over I-395 north for a new Express Lanes flyover ramp. This steel operation has been rescheduled to occur next weekend, Jan. 17-19, weather permitting.

ORIGINAL POST:
Weather permitting, this Friday night, Jan. 10, the Virginia Department of Transportation will close all regular lanes on I-395 north and shift traffic into the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes from Exit 2, Edsall Road (Route 648) to just before Duke Street (Route 236).

These closures will allow crews to safely lift and place steel girders over I-395 north for a new Express Lanes flyover ramp located near Edsall Road.

What Drivers Can Expect:

All I-395 north traffic will be shifted to the left and reduced to one lane just after I-495/Capital Beltway and diverted into the median HOV lanes via a temporary slip ramp. Once past the work zone, traffic will exit from the HOV lanes to the right onto the general purpose lanes, just before Duke Street (Route 236), via another temporary slip ramp.

Details:
– Lane closures on I-395 will begin Friday, Jan. 10 at 9:30 p.m.
– All traffic will be detoured into the HOV lanes between midnight and 5 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 11
– Saturday night, will be reserved as a backup, with closures beginning at 9:30 p.m., and traffic detoured to the HOV lanes between midnight and 6 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 12
– If initial steel lift is completed on Friday, crews will proceed with additional steel work Saturday night and close two of three lanes on I-395 north near Edsall Road.

Motorists should expect similar closures the weekend of Jan. 17 as steel work continues for this new flyover bridge.

The bridge will carry traffic from the Express Lanes’ northern terminus to the general purpose lanes of I-395 north and is the last major steel operation for the Express Lanes project.
