Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement regarding the beginning of George Martin’s term as Rector of the University of Virginia. Martin becomes the first African-American Rector of the University of Virginia, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819.

“George Martin is one of the most esteemed attorneys and leaders in Virginia. George’s career has been marked by his exceptional intellect and unimpeachable character and I am fortunate to have known him for many years. The Board of the University of Virginia has chosen a superbly qualified advocate who will advance the mission and goals of Virginia’s flagship university. I have no doubt George will work fervently alongside President Sullivan to carry out her vision and strategic plan for the institution. Although there is much more to do, this election is emblematic of the great progress being made all across Virginia, as our Commonwealth continues to grow as a thriving, prosperous and diverse state. When George Martin attended the University of Virginia he was one of only 250 African-American students in the entire student body; now, he’s the Rector. The incredible story of Virginia is still being written; this week we saw yet another chapter begin.”
