Police responded to the Skyline Towers apartment complex in Alexandria on Monday, June 17 shortly before 10 a.m., for a report of the sound of shots being fired. The complex is very close to the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

When police officers arrived, they found two dead people in one of the apartments, an adult male and an adult female.

The deceased have now been identified as Lakshmi Bhat, female, 62 years old, of North Carolina, and Anand Venkata, male, 36 years old, of 5597 Seminary Road in Alexandria.

According to police, their investigation showed that Venkata shot and killed Bhat, who was his mother-in-law, and then shot and killed himself though the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will make final determination as to cause and manner of death.
