The Tyler Building on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College flooded this past weekend. As a result, all classes and activities in the Tyler Building are cancelled. Classes and activities in the other buildings, however, are being held as scheduled.
The Tyler Building houses the campus bookstore, the music department and the college-wide newspaper office.
The building used to be an elementary school but was purchased by the college years ago, reportedly for $1, according to a school source. A new building has been slated to be built in its place, but that has not happened yet due to budget constraints.
Details on what caused the flooding and how extensive it is have not been released yet and inquiries by the newspaper have not yet been responded to.
UPDATE:
The Tyler Building will remain closed on Tuesday, April 23 due to flood damage.
According to the college website, students may purchase books online from the Barnes and Noble website and participate in the textbook buyback program at the other NOVA campuses.
2nd UPDATE:
According to NOVA’s Public Information Officer, Jessica Baxter, the flood in the Tyler Building was caused by a malfunctioning water pipe early Sunday morning, April 21. The water damage is contained to the utility room and book store on the lower level and has not affected the other floors of the building. However, the building remains closed at least until Wednesday, April 24. This affects the departments of music, theater, photography, fine art and physical education (and possibly more) on the Alexandria campus.
3rd UPDATE:
According to a Facebook post from Photography Teacher Bob Laubach, the Tyler Building might be closed through the end of semester. His post said that the flooding sent water throughout the building’s electrical conduit. He also added that some photography classes will be held Tuesday, April 23 in the Bisdorf Building on campus or at the Arlington Career Center. All photo classes, according to Laubach, will resume Wednesday in different locations.
4th UPDATE:
The Tyler Building will remain closed until Monday, May 13 for repairs due to water damage, according to college officials.
Some classes that normally take place in the Tyler Building are being relocated to the Bisdorf (AA) or Engineering (AE) buildings, while other classes will be held online through Blackboard for the rest of the Spring 2013 semester.
A relocation list can be found on NOVA’s website here.
