Northern Virginia Community College awards the most associate degrees when compared to other two-year institutions, according to a new report by Community College Week.

During the 2010-11 academic year, NOVA students earned 4,695 associate degrees, nearly 22 percent more than the previous year. Houston Community College came in second with 3,606 associate degrees awarded.

NOVA President Robert G. Templin Jr. believes the increase can be attributed to more people recognizing the value of completing an associate degree.

“Our graduates are eligible to transfer to all the well-known Virginia four-year colleges and universities through our guaranteed admission agreements. That’s a great deal,” Templin said. “In this tough economy, knowledgeable consumers make the most of their college funds by finishing the first two years at NOVA.”

The report also compared the number of associate degrees awarded by discipline. Among two-year institutions, NOVA awarded the most associate degrees in two categories: “Business, Management, Marketing and Related Support Services” and “Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services.”

In addition, NOVA ranked first for the number of Asian-Americans who earned associate degrees with 758 graduates, 5 percent more than the previous year.
