2012 Washington Auto Show Focuses on Green Cars

It was another year of going green at the 2012 Washington Auto Show. “Green” environmentally-friendly cars lead to green money. At least, that’s what the auto makers hope.
The event took place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., over 10 days, from Jan. 27 through Feb. 5. That’s twice the length of last year’s show. Could car buying be making a comeback amidst the recession? Or could it be the popularity of electric cars at the 2011 show that led to a longer event this year?
The show billed itself as presenting more green cars and technologies than any other auto show in America. On display were over 700 new domestic, import and classic vehicles covering two floors and 750,000 square feet of display area.
Included were 65,000 square feet of the “Advanced Technology SuperHighway” that showcased cutting-edge technologies destined for future vehicles, an area which President Obama visited on Jan. 31.
There was also a Military Day, when all military personnel and veterans were admitted free, with various Washington sports and wrestling guests, a play area for the kids and an appearance by Rock-It the Robot.
The Washington Auto Show is presented each year by the Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association.
It was again preceded by two Public Policy days. The first morning included a panel discussion on Capitol Hill among governmental, auto industry and environmental representatives. The second day included presentations by various auto companies on the show floor for the media, followed by a “Sneak Peek” reception for auto and governmental representatives and staff and members of the Administration.
The two days were highlighted that evening by a charity dinner at the Convention Center with a Lifetime Achievement Award being presented this year to Roger Penske, a former race car driver, current owner of several race teams and a noted automotive entrepreneur.
