Christine Holt has been named interim provost at the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College, taking over from Hortense Hinton who was appointed special assistant to NOVA’s president. Hinton will remain in that position until June 30, 2012, when she plans to retire.

A national search will be conducted to select a new provost by July 1, and Holt will serve until a successor is appointed. She is already familiar with NOVA, having worked for several years at the Annandale campus, first as Dean of Operations and most recently as Dean of Academic Administration.

“The Manassas campus has a sterling reputation for service to our students and the community, and I am delighted to have this opportunity to continue the good work taking place here,” Holt said. “I am looking forward to meeting current and former students, faculty and staff and friends of the campus.”

Holt holds a law degree from Cleveland State University. She practiced law for several years with a primary focus in family law. Prior to coming to NOVA, Holt was the executive director for the Alexander Center, a satellite operation for Catawba Valley Community College in North Carolina. In that role, she served as chief academic affairs officer and chief student affairs officer for the site. 

Making the decision to move on wasn’t easy for Hinton.

“Serving as Manassas provost has been the most rewarding position of my 40-year career in higher education. I have truly enjoyed my time at the campus and the tremendous support from the community. This is one of the most exciting teaching and learning environments in the country and that’s why I have mixed emotions about leaving,” she said.

Hinton came to the Manassas campus in January 2004 with more than three decades of experience in higher education, including two years as Dean of Students at NOVA’s Alexandria campus. Among her many accomplishments was managing considerable growth at the campus by adding classroom space at Innovation Park in the Bristow area of Prince William County and overseeing construction of a large academic building scheduled to open next spring.
