Historic Reenactment Events in PWC, Volunteers Needed
The historic Weems-Botts Museum in Dumfries has volunteer opportunities for anyone who wants to help at the museum or with events.
Development Director Joann Barron gave a report at the Aug. 16 Dumfries Town Council meeting on the museum’s activities and number of visitors. She also spoke of opportunities for volunteers to help with research or give tours of the small museum, which was originally built in the 1700s as a private home.
The Weems-Botts website also mentions the need for volunteers to write for the newsletter, create displays and maintain the herb garden.
Barron also told the council of two upcoming events that the museum is hosting.
To commemorate the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Harlem Heights, local author and re-enactor Michael Cecere will give a presentation about The 3rd Virginia Regiment of 1776 called “They Behaved Like Soldiers” on Sept. 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a book signing and tours of the building afterward.
As a tie-in to area events for the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the museum will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1861 blockade of the Potomac River at Merchant Park during the weekend of Sept. 24 and 25.
