The Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College recently announced the winners of the 22nd Annual Writing Competition. The winners received cash prizes of $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place in four categories: essay, one-act play, poetry and short fiction.

Hays “Teddy” McCormick of Manassas was a big winner, earning first place in short fiction for “The Death of Gaspar,” first place in the one-act play category for “The Land of the Blind” and third place in the essay category for “Death of the Author.”

Addison Hoff of Warrenton earned first place in the essay category for “Emeralds, Rohypnol, and Italian Swords.” Second place in essays went to Alan Pai of Fairfax for “A Man Beyond All Men.”

Edward Peter Ponzini of Manassas won first place in poetry for “The Wind that Shakes the Boughs.” Mariya Podeyko of Warrenton earned second place in poetry for “Cold Coffee” and Brittney Knight of Manassas took third place for her poem, “Released.”

Second place for one-act play went to Donald J. Tyrrell of Montclair for “The Confession of Billy Drake.” Michael Phillips of Manassas won third place for his play, “Drug Daze.”

Rachel Boston of Warrenton took second place in short fiction for “I Watch the Sky.” Peter “Andrew” Pristach of Centreville earned third place for “The Arsonist and His Media Circus.”
