What to Buy at Borders Store Closing

27 February 2011 3 Comments

Gregg Allman recently released his first studio album in 14 years, and it’ll be the last sold at Borders Books and Music in North Stafford.

After the company announced last week it was closing 30 percent of its stores nationwide, the location at Stafford Marketplace has marked down all of its merchandise by up to 40 percent.

So what do you buy when one of the area’s largest book retailers and coffee-drinking social spots is going out of business?

Allman’s album for starters. And then there’s Russell Brand, the irreverent comedian who’s appeared in movies like Get him to the Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, has his second biography on sale – “Booky Wook 2” –  at 20 percent off its list price of $14.99.

If Sarah Palin is more your thing, her book, “America By Heart,” can also be found on the discount table.

What’s that? You like graphic novels and are a huge fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead? You can grab Book Six in the popular series that spawned a TV show, at 20 percent off its list price of $34.

Of course there are other graphic novels for Star Wars and Green Lantern fans, just to name a few.

Yes, there’s romance, and for some reason it’s been marked down to 40 percent (more than most items in the store) as if to say love is cheap.

Susan Elizabeth Phillip’s “Call Me Irresistible” is available in hardback, and so is the paperback by Nora Leigh entitled “Nauti and Wild.” I’ll let the name speak for itself.

If “The Sopranos” came and went before your time then you can pick up “The Mafia – The Necessary Reference to Organized Crime” in the – you guessed it – reference section for $26.99 before the 20 percent markdown price.

There are also books for those wanting to brush up on their military ASVAB skills, and books for those who want to do better on their GRE or PRAXIS exams.

But stop, you say. “I forgot to get my loved one a special card to appropriately state my affections and sweet nothings for Valentine’s Day.”

All cards and stationary have been marked 40 percent off. Good luck making that one up.

Company officials say the final decision to close has been made, but there is now talk that the other large book retailer, Barnes and Noble, may open a new location in the same spot.

The Borders in Woodbridge will remain open.
