NOVA’s Men’s Soccer Team Overwhelms the Cecil College Seahawks

15 October 2009 No Comment

NOVA’s men’s soccer team overwhelmed the Cecil College Seahawks 8-0 on September 24 at the Virginia Highlands Park located next to Pentagon City. For a sport that generally sees few goals, the score represented a huge win.

NOVA went out to a 6-0 lead at halftime as it had little difficulty scoring against the porous Cecil defense, as Cecil’s goalie generally had little chance to make saves. Scoring play was tempered in the second half as NOVA scored only two more goals. One goal was a bit of an oddity, as the NOVA goalie took a penalty kick against the Cecil goalie, scoring to make it 7-0. Goals by a goalie are a rare occurrence.

NOVA’s win raised its record to 5-0, and it continued a poor season for Cecil College, which had lost its previous eight games.

The next week, after a postponed game, NOVA’s team suffered almost an exact reversal of fortunes against the College of Southern Maryland in a September 28 game in La Plata, Maryland, losing its first of the season by an 8-1 score. Southern Maryland led by 4-0 at halftime, and NOVA’s lone score came on a rebound shot by Edwin Zolano in the second half which cut the deficit at the time to 6-1.
