Woodbridge to Get New Building

It was a moment of progressive change and long-awaited excitement as the participants in the Northern Virginia Community College Woodbridge campus groundbreaking ceremony watched the beginning of the festivities in the campus theater. A moving opening speech by the Woodbridge campus provost, Dr. Sam Hill, welcomed the prestigious attendees and several key advocates who were involved in the process of making the addition of a new building at Woodbridge possible.

Tribute to American Women Artwork Displayed at Woodbridge

Portraits of prominent American women painted by Rosemary Gallick will be on display at Northern Virginia Community College’s Woodbridge campus from March 7 to April 5 to commemorate Women’s History Month.

The fourth-floor gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is free.

Men’s Basketball Caps Amazing Season With Win

The NOVA men’s basketball team finished a fantastic season by capturing its first–ever Virginia Community College System tournament in Chesapeake March 4 through 6 at the spacious Oscar Smith High School gym. Its three wins there gave it 22 straight wins, as it finished 26-5.
NOVA had won its last four games in the regular season, all at home, by an average of 37 points, but it met stiffer challengers in its last two tournament games, as predicted by Coach Mike Fitzmaurice. NOVA went into the tournament as the number one seed based on its 10-0 VCCS record during the regular season.

Besides being the time when spring really busts out all over Northern Virginia, April is also National Poetry Month. In celebration, the Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale campus library and the NOVA Annandale Writing Center are co-sponsoring a student poetry contest of original works.

U.S. 1 Expansion Worries Business Owners

Anyone who has ever driven in the Occoquan area of Woodbridge may recall less than fond memories of massive gridlock and a sometimes tortuous daily commute. This rise in traffic issues has called for an expansion of U.S. 1 by the Virginia Department of Transportation, which has plans to raise the street level and add on-ramps in place of ordinary intersection turns.

A meeting was held March 24 to showcase the current plans for the project and allow residents to voice their concerns about the coming changes. The meeting, attended by over 100 people, started with a question and answer period, followed by a formal presentation given by those involved with the project.
