Upcoming Demolition
Bridge demolition is scheduled to start on an old southwest ramp over the Capital Beltway’s Inner Loop/ I-495 west-north at the Springfield Interchange, on or about March 12. The demolition will produce significant noise, but crews will do everything possible to speed up the work and lessen the disruption.
A full closure of the Inner Loop/I-495 west-north at I-395 will be put into place during demolition. Traffic will be detoured to Exit 170B, I-395 north to Exit 2, Edsall Road, and then directed to I-395 south to Exit 1D, I-495 north towards Tysons Corner.
Work is performed at night when traffic volumes are lowest to ensure the safety of all drivers and our workforce, and to minimize the impact on traffic.
Demolition Details
- Bridge demolition will start on or about March 12.
- Demolition will take 2-3 weeks to complete.
- Demolition work will take place Monday – Friday, between the hours of 11 p.m.and 5 a.m.
- During demolition, four to seven nights of work will produce especially loud noise due to the process of separating the steel and the concrete elements of the bridge. This safety precaution is necessary to keep concrete pieces from vibrating loose.
- All work is weather dependent.
