Ashely Poptanycz is the new prior learning assessment (PLA) specialist serving all NOVA campuses. Poptanycz is working to spread awareness of the college’s offering of credit for prior learning options to students, faculty and staff. She also advises students regarding their credit for prior learning, and teaches a PLACE portfolio development course (SDV 298) each semester.
NOVA has a number of credit for prior learning opportunities available to adult students, such as credit by exam (CLEP, DSST and ABLE), the PLACE portfolio development course, credit for military experience and credit for evaluated training and credentials.
Poptanycz’s role is one of several strategies to encourage adult-learner completion through NOVA’s DOL “Credentials to Careers” TAACCCT Grant.
Do you know adult learners who may be eligible to earn college credit with their experiential learning? Please feel free to contact Poptanycz or provide her information to students. She can be reached at pla@nvcc.edu or 703-425-5835. Also, please check out the PLA website at www.nvcc.edu/priorlearning for more information about PLA and updates on upcoming webinars.
