A Science Seminar will be held Friday, Nov. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. in the CE Theater on the Annandale campus. NOVA Biology Professor Lisa Williams will discuss “Who Loves You Baby? A Brief Look at Plant-Human Relationships.” Students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

Light refreshments will be served.

Williams’ presentation will focus on the long-term relationships that humans have had with plants. She will discuss the four plants Michael Pollan mentioned in his book, “The Botany of Desire.” Building on his plants-eye view of the world, Williams will describe other plants that we find especially attractive, such as those that have or represent beauty, control, intoxication, nourishment and sweetness.

Williams teaches botany, general biology and anatomy and physiology at NOVA. She earned an undergraduate degree in biology and a master’s degree in botany from George Mason University. Williams has worked in private industry as a toxicology technician for Hazleton Labs in Vienna, Va., and as a biochemistry technician for Glen Research in Sterling.

After teaching at NOVA’s Loudoun and Woodbridge campuses, she joined the Annandale campus full-time in Fall 2008.

This event is presented by the Science Seminar Committee; Math, Science and Engineering Division and the Lyceum, Annandale campus.
