It’s official. Fall is here. The leaves have changed color, a cool breeze has set in and you’re up to your eyeballs in homework. Not to mention, with every new season comes fun new trends to try out. What’s the best part about fall? The answer is Halloween.

So what can you wear for Halloween that’s still trendy and fun, without being too predictable? Here are some ideas for what you can wear out on Halloween night – or in class if you’re aiming to scare your professor or classmates.

Do you remember that iconic indie flick, Juno? This is your chance to shine if you’re currently pregnant or even if you just really had a big lunch and have a “food baby,” as the movie mentions. Juno’s look is all about understated cool, so all you really need is a thrift store band tee, a pair of Converse from back in high school and a ponytail to match. Rubbing your belly and listening to angst music while going door to door trick-or-treating or at a Halloween party will really add to the effect of the costume.

If you’re a history buff, then why not consider being Marie Antoinette? If you’re the type who likes cakey pale makeup and big hair but in a classier way, then this is the costume for you. Is there an old high school prom dress in your closet? Then you can make this costume quickly or easily. Otherwise, you can always borrow a friend’s dress or take a peek at your local thrift store. Make sure that you’ve got some kind of cover up shawl. Get your hair to have a much height as humanly possible and add baby powder to mimic Marie Antoinette’s golden locks. Walking around with a cake and serving it to people can also be a nice commentary on her famous misquote of, “Let them eat cake.”

Are you someone who enjoys being something scarier for Halloween? Then consider being a zombie. Not those super-human unbelievably fast and strong zombies, but the kind that looks like a student who stayed up all night cramming for a biology exam. The Walking Dead has refreshed the passion of zombie lovers everywhere and is a look that’s easily pulled off. Practice your dead limp walk before Halloween to ensure that it’s realistic, and pick up some costume makeup at a Halloween store or party supply store. Find a photo of the type of zombie (yes, there are different types) that you like and replicate the makeup. Finish it off with your brother’s old ripped flannel shirt and a deep desire for flesh and you’re good to go.

These are just a few ideas on some fun and out-of-the-box ways to formulate Halloween costumes. The most important thing is to be creative, thrifty and to have fun. Halloween only comes once a year, and you need to make each second of tricks and treats count.
