The unexpected 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Va., on Aug. 23 led to numerous evacuations across Northern Virginia and beyond.

The historic Weems-Botts Museum in Dumfries has volunteer opportunities for anyone who wants to help at the museum or with events.

NOVA Fortnightly, is currently looking to hire writers, copy editors, photographers, layout/page designers, cartoonists, newspaper distributors, ad reps and a webmaster. These are PAID positions.

Northern Virginia Community College will be closed for the weekend (Aug. 27 & 28) because of Hurricane Irene.

NOVA has re-opened after closing for the day on Aug. 23 from the earthquake.

Due to the 5.8 magnitude earthquake, Northern Virginia Community College is closed for the rest of the day, Aug. 23.

The town of Dumfries is going to have a new website. MDA Technologies Group has created the new site, which is in the process of being beta-tested by a representative cross section of the community.

The latest changes to Dumfries’ historic boundaries were made by the town council in 2005. The problem is they were never amended in the town code, so now Virginia’s oldest-chartered town must revert to boundaries drawn in 1790.

These youth fishing tournaments are free, though parking will cost a few dollars. Because it’s for children up to age 15, a fishing license is not required as it would be for adults.
