Review: Loudoun’s Six Degrees of Separation

Six Degrees of Separation had its opening night on Friday, October 9, at NOVA Loudon’s Waddell Theater. The house was packed, the laughs were plenty and the actors, who could be heard even in the back of the theatre, made the unusual transition from addressing the audience to addressing each other without a hitch.

The play, directed by Haley Murphy and produced by Colleen Stock for CCT with 2nd Flight Theatre Company, deals with imagination in art, in lies, in self-identity and in hope.

When someone blocks the world out, uninterested, they are only blocking themselves from a space where growth and learning occurs. Cathia Soughe, Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Delta Tau chapter president at Woodbridge campus, can definitely agree with that sentiment.

“My experience as president has been very overwhelming. I work full time, school full time, and being involved in clubs; it’s really hard to manage and do well in all activities.” Soughe thought to herself, “How am I going to make it? This will be too overwhelming.”

After the Fight, They Won the Right to Pray

It’s been fought long and hard by students at many institutions of learning. The issue of religion and education has been very controversial – striking up heated discussions between students and faculty to allow students the right to practice their religious duties in school.

The new meditation/meeting room “is for everyone” said Haroon Ismail, former Muslim Student Association president and president of the student body at the Alexandria campus. “[Since] it’s a state institution, we can’t have a room designated only for faith-based activities. So, we got this room on the condition that it would be a meeting room/meditation room. Whenever there isn’t a meeting here, students can come and pray and prayers are meetings. It can also be an open space for students to come and have a bit of quiet time.”

The past two weeks have been filled with twists and turns in regard to health care reform. Multiple reports and, finally, a committee vote have pushed President Obama’s health care reform tread another step forward.

On Oct. 7, the Congressional Budget Office, the non-partisan agency which provides analyses of legislation and budgets for Congress, released a memo containing their findings on the monetary aspects of the most prominent health care bill to date: the America’s Healthy Future Act of 2009.

High School Student at NOVA Reaches for the Stars

Esther Clark, a rising star in academic excellence and leadership at Northern Virginia Community College, just turned seventeen this summer. She started taking classes at NOVA in 2006, and since then she has risen to the position of President in two of NOVA’s most prestigious organizations. She has also represented the student body in the Annandale’s Campus Council.

Clark has a unique academic background. She was home schooled with her brothers and sisters and started her dual-enrollment at NOVA when she was fourteen. “My parents are my principals and my teachers” says Clark, “It’s a teaching style that really goes with the flow.” Clark will receive her high school diploma in the spring, and the 62 college credits she has already earned are a great starting off point for her future.

187 NOVA students waited for the chance of a lifetime: a 15-minute interview with representatives from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The line in Annandale’s McDiarmid Building wrapped around two corners. An additional interview room had to be added to deal with demand, and chairs were brought into the hallway for students who had been standing for over 30 minutes.

Gallery: Alexandria Fall Festival

Snake charming was one of the favorite attractions at the October 10 Community Fair at the Alexandria campus. The male student volunteer holds a 12 foot python while the young lady holds a boa constrictor. Both snakes are from the Critters & Creatures animal shelter in Leesburg.
